In 2009, I (Marjy) received a message through Facebook while in an Abnormal Psychology class from a friend’s brother - you guessed right, it was Andy. He was curious to know if I would be interested in going along with him on a photoshoot. Apparently I had an interesting look. It must have been my big Persian eyes that mesmerized him, ha! Well, here we are 9 years and two kids later. Photography is what brought us together and it’s what has lead us on our current path. Shortly after obtaining my Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling, I decided it was time to dedicate 100% of myself to our kids and to us as a family. What we do is more than business, it’s a reflection of who we are as individuals and as a couple. One of our favorite quotes from Mumford and Sons captures where we are now - “Where you invest your love, you invest your life.”
When I (Andy) was younger, I never really knew what I was going to pursue in life, so to be here is rather interesting. To me photography was just a hobby; just a camera my father would always pull out during special occasions like birthdays, graduations, vacations and so on. It wasn't until later, while looking through my family's photo albums that I realized photography could be something more. I saw them filled with Polaroids and film from the old Kodak point-and-shoots, the simplest ways to freeze a moment back then. Most of the photos I saw had everyone looking with cheesy smiles. They were great but the candid photos were my favorite. You could feel all the emotion spilling out of them. I realized then that you can truly relive a moment by just looking at a photograph itself…even if it wasn't your moment. Teaching myself, I managed to learn how to capture those snippets of time where the moments were just right. People often say I have an eye for what I do, and an eye certainly does help, and with two... oh boy! But in all honesty, I’m just feeling the moment. I love nothing more than preserving a memory that someone else can relive and share with others from their own family albums.
Before we end, we would like to take a moment to recognize someone who is very dear to us both, someone who has been an inspiration, a mentor, and most importantly, a friend - Ricardo Serpa. As some of you may know, most of Andy's time was spent working alongside Ricardo at Lux Images, a studio which he founded back in 2006. Needless to say, working with such a passionate and driven talent helped him grow both creatively and professionally. The following is a quote by Ricardo, which has always resonated deeply with us and is a philosophy we will always proudly value and honor.
“We believe in photography as an expression of art, and that good enough is never enough. Our goal is to always create unique images and tell the story of very special moments, with all the joy, spontaneity and emotion that are already there. It’s not what you see, but how you see it. We are driven by passion. Passion for life, for people, for photography. Not your everyday images, but something special. A visual feast for your eyes, a fine treat for your emotions. Be it your wedding day, be it that long-waited Mitzvah celebration or a funny, relaxed family afternoon at the beach, what we offer you is our complete dedication to an unforgettable experience.“ - Ricardo Serpa
